McRae “Mac” Culbertson, a senior analyst with Draper and Kramer, Incorporated’s Commercial Finance Group (CFG), knew from a young age he was interested in commercial real estate finance. His father, a commercial broker, often brought him along while he toured various properties, cementing his son’s passion for the industry. Mac went on to major in finance at Miami University (OH) and grew his experience through various internships and his first full-time role back in his hometown of Charlotte, N.C., serving as an analyst specializing in bridge financing at Red Oak Capital Holdings.

“After some time at home, I started to feel like I wanted something new – not just a new job, but a new experience,” he said. “I had friends who lived in Chicago and I always thought it was a great city with lots of potential for young real estate professionals.”

This past summer, Mac met Bill Barry, senior vice president within the CFG, and eventually landed a position as an analyst within the group this past October. Since then, Mac has made a meaningful impact on the CFG and was promoted to senior analyst in March. In this role, Mac supports the origination and execution of commercial mortgage banking transactions, and plays a critical role in financial modeling, due diligence coordination, lender communication and transaction management. “No day is the same,” he said, “and I enjoy being involved in sourcing different capital structures across a variety of asset types.”

“Mac’s been doing a terrific job for CFG, and we’re lucky the timing worked out for him to join our team,” noted Barry.

Mac said the people on his team are another thing he loves about his work with the CFG, and appreciates all the opportunities he has to learn and grow within the industry. “My dad always told me, ‘Be more interested than interesting,’ he said. “I take every opportunity to ask questions and meet new people.”

In his free time, Mac enjoys exploring his new home of Chicago, as well as skiing, traveling, playing golf and tennis, fishing and spending time with friends and family. He’s also a dedicated fan of the Carolina Panthers.
